About Ella’s

Ella’s opened in the summer of 2003 by Chef/Owner Ed Hanson, and is named for Ed’s daughter.  Ella’s features traditional, Neapolitan-style, thin crust pizza baked in a blistering-hot, wood-fired pizza oven.   Ella’s is located in the heart of the chic Penn Quarter neighborhood within an easy walk of the National Mall, Verizon Center, DC Convention Center, the Ford’s, Shakespeare, and National Theaters, and several cinemas.

The menu is based on the freshest and best seasonal ingredients and consistent execution.  The pizzas are baked directly on the stone floor of the oven, which enables both the top of the pizza and the crust to bake simultaneously.  The result is a deliciously, smoky, crusty pizza, with lively direct flavors.   All dishes are designed with simple integrity, inspired from the changing seasons or the flavors and traditions of Neapolitan Italy.   The wine and beer list is selected with care – from small wineries and microbreweries local and abroad – reflecting our appreciation in hand crafted foods.

Ed Hanson – Chef/Owner

With over 30 years of professional experience, Ed has demonstrated skill in the critical mix of qualities needed for a restaurant’s success: a passionate commitment to fine food, balanced by a talent for management and unerring business competence.

Ed has served as the Corporate Chef for Sam & Harry’s, opening Chef at Jaleo, McPherson Grill and Loew’s L’Enfant Hotel, to mention a few of his positions in which he was instrumental elevating those dining destinations to the positions of esteem they hold today.

Ed’s vision was to create a true neighborhood restaurant where everyone is comfortable and has fun! The philosophy is as straightforward as the food, use the best quality ingredients, prepared simply and properly, and serve them with joy.
